What is Carpooling?
Carpooling is when there is more than one occupant
in a private car. We all share cars regularly, with
our friends and family, without thinking about it.
But there are often times when a driver has empty
seats in the car because they don't know of anyone
who needs a lift.
The Tune Travel matching network puts people travelling
in the same direction or a similar destination in
contact with each other, allowing them to arrange
to travel together and share the costs, whilst also
reducing congestion and pollution on our roads.
What are the benefits of Carpooling?
Cities all over the world are suffering from traffic
congestion, long commuting time, parking problems
and air pollution mainly contributed by the numbers
of cars in the city.
As it is, on a normal working day 200,000 cars enter Kuala Lumpur everyday and 120,000 of these
are Single Occupancy Vehicles.
Hence, there is potentially 480,000 empty car seats coming into Kuala Lumpur everyday.
Carpooling :
- » Reduces expenditure on fuel, You can save more than RM2,000 yearly. Check here
- » Reduces traffic jams
- » Reduces parking problems
- » Reduces pollution
- » Make New Friends
Did you know that if 10% of Malaysian car owners carpooled one day a week, there will be 700,000 less car on the road everyday?
What are the costs of carpooling?
Tune Travel makes no suggestions on how much a passengers should pay the driver for a lift. If they chose to, drivers and passengers can split the cost of petrol and toll charges. Averagely the cost of travelling in a car is between about RM0.20 to RM 0.30 per kilometre.
How can I get involved?
Tune Travel is available to anyone over the age
of 18 who travels in Malaysia - students, commuters,
parents sending their children to school, football
supporters, festival goers, tourists, employees -
anyone!

or regular journeys, including:
- » Getting to and from work
- » Getting the children to school
- » Travelling to a festival, big event or show
- » Getting to and from university
- » Getting to and from the airport
- » And for most Malaysians, it is during the Festive
Seasons
We have a section that caters for traveling during the festive seasons - known as "Jom Balik Kampung" While some of us have to drive alone, many of us are out there struggling to purchase a bus ride home so we can Balik Kampung to be with our family. Why not share?
You can also search for travelling companions for one-off journeys to anywhere in the country.
What are the chances of finding a match to my requirements?
The chances are very high that you will be able
to find travelling partners especially for commuting
to work. The Tune Travel system has been designed
to help you identify as many possible travel partnerships.
If, however, you're having difficulty in finding a
match, we suggest that you look for travelling partner(s)
for part of your journey, and do the rest on public
transport.
And remember - the more members we have, the greater
the chance of finding an exact match. So make sure
you tell your friends about Tune Travel and get them
to register their journeys as soon as possible.
Can I view all Travel Listings?
Yes, you can view all travel listings.
However, if a member has chosen only to share
his or her journey with someone of the same sex
as him or her, you will not be able to view the
listing if you are not of the same sex.
Will my e-mail address and other contact details be visible to other users?
Only contact details that you choose to share will be available to other users. You can change your contact preference and your contact information in the My Profile page.
Do I have to pay to search for drivers or passengers?
It is completely free to search for travelling companions. However drivers and passengers may split the cost of each journey if they choose to do so.
How do I contact the driver/passenger?
Having selected a suitable travelling match, you should contact the driver/passenger (to agree a time and place to meet) using their contact details.
We do not recommend that you exchange home addresses (for security reasons), and we advise all members to meet in public locations such as a train station or bus station, which are easy to get to and away from, should the lift fail.
What happens if my carpooling arrangement fails?
Tune Travel is solely a travel information aggregator
and we cannot be held responsible for any journeys
that don't work out as planned.
Likewise the drivers
and passengers who register their journeys with us
are under no legal obligation to their travelling
companions or to Tune Travel to make any journeys.
However we hope that if plans change and journeys
can't be made, that all affected parties will be contacted
and forewarned with appropriate notice.
We also suggest
that travelling companions arrange to meet at locations
close to public transport networks, so that if plans
fall through the passengers have the option of using
an alternative form of transport to get to their destination
on time.
How safe is carpooling?
The safety of members of Tune Travel is a priority
and we have made our web-site as secure as we can.
All members' details are stored securely in the database
and only the members' intended contact and travel
information can be accessed on-line.
To further improve security, we have two categories of membership i.e. Ordinary Members and Verified Members.
Verified Members are those who have provided to us either a Letter of Confirmation from the organisation they
belong to i.e. company, government department, college / university to confirm their identity or a copy of
their identity card / driver’s license.
Hence you may feel more comfortable to consider carpooling / travel sharing with a Verified Member.
When it comes to travelling, every member is responsible
for his or her own safety. Nevertheless Tune Travel
recommends that members' follow some simple safety
measures outlined below:
- » Get to know your potential carpool companion as much as possible before you meet them.
- » Preferably, arrange your meeting in a public place.
- » Inform a friend or family member of who you will be
traveling with, when and to where.
- » Make sure you show each other your Identity Cards,
passports, student cards or driving licenses so you
know you're traveling with the right person.
- » Remember that you are under no obligation to go ahead
with any carpooling arrangement. If you have any doubts
about your traveling companion, for any reason, you
should avoid traveling with them.
- » If you are not comfortable travelling with strangers, try the Communities Section where travelling information is only shared among community members.
- » If you have any problems in relation to your carpooling
arrangement, please call us at 03-7804 6364 and we
will try to help in any way that we can.
For more information about safety and security of
personal information please read Terms and Conditions and the Privacy Policy .
Why is Identity Verification important?
In any community trust is an important aspect
that determines the relationships among its members
and identity is a key part in building trust.
Its natural before you trust somebody you need
to know something about the person you are dealing
with and hence the identity of the person.
Knowing who to trust in a “Virtual Environment”
presents unique challenges. Traditionally virtual
community members have based their trust on relationships
built over time, and often on some basic verification
such as Contact Information.
As the community grows, safety concerns increase
and it’s clear we need to enhance identification.
Hence, we introduced two categories of membership
i.e. Ordinary Membership and Verified Membership that aims to deliver confidence and security.
It gives all members the chance to independently
verify certain aspects of their potential travel
partner’s identity (their name, age, location
and sex for instance) if they choose to. This
will help establish trust by removing a layer
of anonymity for those they interact with. It’s
much easier to trust someone who puts their name
behind their words and actions.
We want to reiterate that the choice of becoming
a Verified Member is voluntary for all members.
Members who do not want to verify their identity
may continue to remain unverified and will continue
to have access to all Travel Listings. We’ll
only flag those members who choose to verify themselves
as “Verified Members”.
What is the difference between Ordinary Member and Verified Member?
An Ordinary
Member is one who has not provided any documentation that
can be used to verify his or her identity.
Whereas, a Verified Member is one who has provided
documentation to enable verification of aspects of who
they are in real life, such as age, sex and location.
Why do we encourage Verified Membership?
Verified Membership provides an additional layer of
trust for Carpooling / travel sharing arrangements.
Security has always been our priority. The growing
popularity of Carpooling gives rise to the need to add
measures of security so that Carpooling remains a safe
environment for all users.
We also want to make sure that members have the tools
they need to interact with the community in a way that
works for them. This is a more effective way of identification
use to evaluate whether users can trust another individual.
How do I become a Verified Member?
To become a Verified Member, all you need to do is the following:
